BVT is a champion for this NM community

Des Moines, NM: Baca Valley Telephone (BVT) installed fiber in one of the most challenging places to build in the US. A place affectionately referred to by the NM State Police as "New Mexico's Antarctica." It got this nickname for being cold, barren, and sparsely populated.

The families that form the workforce of BVT is highly motivated to build out more despite the challenges. Through their work, they have found that giving the rural communities in NM access to fiber, mass exodus that has happened in many NM communities is being slowed down.

NM has long had an established problem of the graduates of its colleges moving to other states, rather than remaining with their families, because they lack to opportunities to establish careers when they enter the workforce.

BVT has found out that building fiber creates opportunities, and has been investing in their communities. In addition to putting 400 miles fiber in the ground, BVT has supported a large variety of scholarship funding in their community.

Paul Briesh, Jr, General Manager of BVT said, "We are adding more fiber and are able to serve our schools and ranches. The fiber creates an opportunity for the younger professionals to stay in the area. They have access to remote jobs, telehealth and other opportunities in a community that doesn't have a grocery store."

As a result, they are seeing a population return as a direct result of building out fiber infrastructure. Briesh states, "We are only about 60% of where we want to be, but we will get there because we are invested in our community. Our employees are on the school board, are EMTs and firefighters. We live here, eat here, and our kids and grandkids are part of the community."

Recently, BVT joined NM Fiber Network, and Briesh is delighted to join because he, and others at BVT think it is essential to take advantage of the statewide network of fiber that has already been put in the ground by companies like BVT to build New Mexican communities. He said, "Not only do we have the infrastructure in place, but we have the equipment in place to monitor it, and we already work with each other. The state of NM Benefits from these small companies, because we take pride in serving the community and want our children to thrive here."
